Faustina (TBS 2017) and Bertille, leading the Ladies Challenge de LARGE

02 March 2021 Diplomas

Bertille MORIN and Faustina AGIUS both discovered rugby during their studies. It was love at first sight ! Once they had finished their studies, there was no question of stopping rugby. They continue to play and participate in the Ladies Challenge de LARGE and which they now organize, their way of giving back to rugby for everything they got out of it. Let's meet the two amateurs of rugby :

What made you start rugby ?

BM : When I was 20, a prep class Physics lecturer who loves rugby and organizes matches and beginners games to share his passion with students encouraged me to come and discover a sport I knew nothing about. I fell in love ! Since then, I have not stopped playing within the university team and then the Ladies Challenge.

FA : I have always enjoyed watching rugby without really thinking I would get involved. When I came to Toulouse for my studies in 2013, it just made sense to join the university team. And then, just like Bertille, I fell in love right from the first tackle !

Why rugby instead of a different sport ?

BM : Because of its collective, committed and solidarity aspects, and because there is place for every size and shape of player !

FA : For the team spirit which grows with training out in the cold and with the aches and pains after matches, it's quite unique in that way !

You organize the Ladies Challenge de LARGE. What made you decided to get involved in the organization ?

BM : I was very much involved in my team's association and when I handed it over to someone else, I thought about getting involved in the challenge in order to share our experience with new teams and try to increase the size of the championship and the LARGE network.

FA : For the special times we had as a team on and off the pitch, the Ladies Challenge gave me so much over the years so helping with the organization is my way of saying thank you !

Please tell us about this Challenge : Who is it for and how is it organized ?

The Ladies Challenge is open to all women over 18 who want to continue rugby after their further studies as a fun, leisure activity while keeping up the competitive side. However the commitment is less demanding than club level. Our teams train once a week and we play in a one-day championship each month where all the teams play against each other. The tournament is held on Saturdays, around 3pm and then its off to the host's clubhouse for after-match socializing. The season ends with the final rounds and the winner is awarded with a shield. Today, nearly all the teams are made up of former university students.

This season you have decided to join the LIFR, why ?

It is the LIFR's policy to develop amateur rugby that made us join this year. We will be able to develop pour Challenge and showcase it to all the members in our aim to increase membership and encourage more players in women's rugby as it is fun and anyone can play.
